The professional development days facilitated by Rick Simunsen and held at ATEC's Lonsdale site was a great success and opened the eyes of the fellow D2C teachers that would generally be focused on timber frame construction. Steel framing is increasingly popular in the construction industry and with the option of a traineeship under steel frame erecting coming closer, it will gain momentum. So many young adults may have employment options here. For some people, the thought of a four-year apprenticeship is quite daunting and steel framing may be a fast track option. Highly driven or motivated successful candidates could be up and running their own operations within a few years under a restricted sub-contractors license.
These PD sessions would not have been possible without the network of hardworking people organising materials and giving up their time, Craig Fleming form Maxispan, Monica Clark from Bluescope, Marie Patterson (CEO) & Richard Megaw (D2C Manager), Stephen Marsden D2C Support Officer) from the CITB, Brayden Clark (State Rep) from Makita tools to mention just a few. Thank you to the extremely generous people that made this event run so smoothly. It was really like industry royalty attended. I thoroughly enjoyed meeting you all and sharing views on skills shortages, industry trends and most importantly the future of VET in Schools. Above are a couple of photos from the sessions.
Richard Megaw representing the CITB has passed on our thanks to the wonderful D2C team of teachers, Andrew (Kadina), Grant (Victor Harbour), Greg and Darryl (Unley), Kieran (Mannum), Jason (KI), David (Springbank), Robert (Kapunda), Adrian (Gleeson), Russell (Aberfoyle), Addison (Ocean View), Andrew (St. Pat's). The open forum held at the end of the Friday session was a brilliant experience to gain views on future courses and for everyone to talk about projects and training styles.
I feel honoured to have been part of putting these PD sessions together and hope to see you all again at future events.
