Registering for the first time
If you have not had a trainee or apprentice before, you will need to register for approval through the Traineeship and Apprenticeship Services. ATEC Australian Apprenticeships Centre can assist you with this.
You will be contacted by TAS after your application is received and a meeting will be set up. They will go through your obligations as an employer of a trainee or apprentice.
Trainees and Apprentices must be permanently employed
To take advantage of the generous incentives available, employees under a training contract must be employed as permanent employees. This does not include casual workers or sub-contractors.
Each Traineeship and Apprenticeships includes a probationary period
This probationary period will differ for each qualification, however most trade apprenticeships have a three month probationary period.
Trainees and Apprentices employed under a training contract are exempt from Workcover costs
If an employer is registered to pay Workcover on their employees, any staff employed under a contract of training are exempt from Workcover costs. The employee must still be registered but their remuneration is not included in the calculation of the business' Worcover levy.
* Registration costs apply where there is only one employee*
Trainees and Apprentices attract an 80% rebate on Payroll Tax for Employers
If you have Apprentices employed on a training contract and they are under the age of 25, you are able to claim an 80% rebate on your payroll tax. This rebate is able to be claimed through Revenue SA.
